HOW WE CAN CHANGE YOUR LIFE
How Can We Help You Change Your Life?
Generally, bariatric surgery is considered when a patient’s Body Mass Index, or BMI, reaches 40 (Morbidly Obese), or 35 with an obesity-related health condition, such as high blood pressure, high cholesterol, Type 2 diabetes, sleep apnea, and more. However, BMI is not a perfect measurement, as it does not take into account muscle weight. Dr. Alok Gandhi in Rochester, Greece, and Newark, NY will be able to help you determine if you are a candidate for and would benefit from bariatric surgery.
You may have tried countless diets or exercise regimens, but sometimes losing weight is not that easy. Sometimes, obesity can be caused by factors you cannot control, such as genetics or the way your body digests and processes food.
Dr. Gandhi and his team are proud to have helped many patients achieve a healthier weight and lifestyle with bariatric surgery. Utilizing the latest technology in minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery, Dr. Gandhi is able to perform procedures using small incisions that reduce scarring and risk of complications.

Dr. Gandhi Performs the Following Bariatric Procedures:
Laparoscopic Gastric Sleeve
The gastric sleeve procedure, also known as a vertical sleeve gastrectomy, is a restrictive surgery that involves stapling the stomach to create a slim vertical sleeve about the size of a banana. The rest of the stomach is then removed, including the section that produces ghrelin, a hormone that creates the sensation of hunger. This is a nonreversible procedure that is simpler and has less complications than traditional gastric bypass, and does not involve placing a device inside the body as does gastric banding.
Gastric Bypass
Gastric bypass is a procedure in which the stomach is stapled to create a small pouch, which will function as the new stomach. Then, Dr. Gandhi creates the “bypass” by dividing the small bowel and attaching the divided section to the pouch. This bypass allows for food to skip over most of the small intestines, which means the body is unable to absorb as many calories.
Gastric bypass is the oldest of the bariatric procedures and can be very successful in helping patients lose a significant amount of weight. However, after the procedure, patients will need to take vitamins, iron, calcium, and sometimes B12 in order to supplement the reduced nutrients the body is absorbing. Patients may also experience dumping syndrome, or abdominal discomfort after eating calorie-dense foods. However, dumping syndrome may encourage you to avoid these foods, which can in turn help you lose more weight.
Laparoscopic Adjustable Gastric Banding
Otherwise known as Lap Band Surgery, adjustable gastric banding involves placing a band around the upper portion of the stomach, creating a pouch and a narrow opening that leads to the larger part of the stomach. Therefore, less food is required to feel full, and the amount of time it takes for food to pass from the pouch to the stomach for digestion is increased. The band is able to be adjusted according to your needs; if you need to lose more weight, the band is tightened to further increase digestion time, whereas if you are losing weight too quickly, the band is loosened. Because the procedure is adjustable and removable if needed, there is less risk involved.
Laparoscopic Duodenal Switch
This procedure, otherwise known as biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch, is the most complicated bariatric surgery, but is also one of the most effective. The size of the stomach is restricted and the small intestines are reorganized to create malabsorption of fats, calories, and nutrients. The powerful combination of restriction and malabsorption is highly effective in helping patients lose weight and lead a healthier lifestyle. However, after the procedure, patients must stay on a strict supplementation regimen to ensure their bodies are receiving the correct nutrients.
Revisional Surgery
If you have had previous bariatric surgery and need more help achieving the weight loss you need for a healthier life, Dr. Gandhi performs revisional surgeries. These procedures are performed if Dr. Gandhi has determined that diet and exercise are not the cause of the weight gain, and that there are no other underlying health issues. There are several options for revisional surgeries, which Dr. Gandhi will discuss with you.
